What is ES-202?

The Massachusetts Labor Market Information database utilizes Employment and Wage data (ES-202), now called the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) nationally, which is collected and published by the U.S. Department of Labor. The data is populated from reports filed in compliance with state and federal unemployment insurance laws, and includes employment and wages for the state, designated labor market and workforce development areas, cities and towns, and counties.

Private sector employers, local, and state employers file a Quarterly Contributions Report (QCR) to their respective state, as well as funds for contributions payable to fund the state unemployment insurance benefits system. This data only reflects state employment and wages, and does not reflect individual establishments. Because of this, QCEW also conducts surveys, one for private businesses with more than 3 employees and one for companies with multiple locations. For the former, BLS describes that one-third of businesses receive this survey, and states are required to have a 70% response rate for companies surveyed. This estimates that approximately 23% of business records are verified.
